Overview
Balloon sinuplasty is a minimally-invasive procedure that helps treat chronic sinusitis by draining the nasal sinuses and clearing blocked sinuses. This endoscopic nasal surgery works by inflating the sinus passages with a balloon inserted through the nose to restore normal sinus function and drainage.
What are the benefits of balloon sinuplasty?
This procedure offers many advantages, including:
- No tissue or bone removal
- No incisions or cuts
- Short recovery period
- Immediate post-op relief
- Quick, safe, and effective procedure
What to expect before balloon sinuplasty?
During your consultation, our ENT specialist will go over your medical history, ask about your symptoms, and perform a physical examination. They will also request a CT scan to determine whether balloon sinuplasty is the right treatment for your problem. You will need to arrange for someone to drive you home and help you around the house after the procedure.
What to expect during the procedure?
Sinuplasty can be done under general or local anesthesia, and is performed entirely through the nostrils and takes about an hour to complete.
The doctor will start by injecting a catheter into your nostril using an endoscope (a thin, flexible plastic tube with a camera and light at its end) into the nasal passages. They will then insert a tiny balloon into your sinuses using the catheter and inflate the balloon to widen the sinus entrance and facilitate drainage of the sinus cavity. Once the balloon is inflated, the doctor will use a saline rinse to clear the passages and cavities of debris. The balloon is then deflated and removed, and the sinus is allowed to drain on its own.
What to expect after balloon sinuplasty?
Most patients are able to return home the same day as the procedure and resume normal activities within 24 to 48 hours. You may experience mild discomfort in the nasal area, which can be addressed with over-the-counter medications. You may also notice some bloody drainage or discharge coming from your nose in the week following surgery, which is normal and will go away within 5 to 7 days.
You will be given a saline solution to flush your nasal passages for a week to remove mucus and debris from your nose to prevent nasal congestion and maintain nasal hygiene. You should avoid blowing your nose for the first 2 days following surgery and refrain from strenuous activity for at least a week. You should also keep your head and neck elevated while sleeping.
