What causes ear infections?
The Eustachian tube connects your middle ear to the top of your throat and the back of your nasal cavity. This tube regulates pressure by ensuring that the air pressure in your middle ear is the same as outside your body. It also keeps the middle ear well-ventilated, keeping it clean and dry. If the Eustachian tube becomes blocked and air can no longer flow freely, the middle ear can become moist and warm, making it highly susceptible to infection. Infection leads to fluid buildup in the middle ear, which can cause pain and difficulty hearing. Factors that can cause Eustachian tube blockage include:
- Colds and flu
- Allergies
- Sinus infections
- Smoking
- Swollen adenoids
- Changes in air pressure

What is sleep apnea?
Sleep apnea is a disorder that can be dangerous to your health, where your breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. Signs to watch out for include loud snoring and feeling tired even after sleeping through the night.
There are three main types of sleep apnea:
Obstructive sleep apnea, where the muscles at the back of the throat relax, blocking the airway.
Central sleep apnea, where your brain doesn’t send the right signals to the muscles that control breathing. Complicated sleep apnea syndrome, a combination of obstructive and central sleep apnea.
If you suspect you have any of the above types of sleep apnea, see your doctor. Sleep apnea can cause serious problems such as an increased risk of obesity, stroke, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart failure, and more.
In particular, see your doctor if you—or your partner—notice that you:
- Snore loudly enough to disturb others or yourself.
- Wake during the night gasping for air or choking.
- Have intermittent pauses in breathing during sleep.
- Be excessively sleepy during the day.
What causes sinusitis?
When the sinuses fill with fluid and become blocked, germs can grow and cause infection. While acute sinusitis is temporary, chronic sinusitis lasts for 12 weeks or more. Conditions that can cause sinus blockage include:
- Nasal polyps: These soft growths can block the sinuses or nasal passages.
- Deviated septum: If the wall between the nostrils is not straight, it can block or narrow the sinus passages.
- Respiratory infections: Common colds and other respiratory infections can thicken and inflame the sinus membranes, preventing mucus drainage. These infections can be fungal, viral, or bacterial.
- Allergies: Inflammation associated with allergies, such as hay fever, can block the sinuses.
- Medical conditions: Complications of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), cystic fibrosis, and certain immune system disorders can lead to nasal congestion.
What are nasal polyps?
Nasal polyps are growths in the lining of the sinuses or nasal passages. They are noncancerous and painless, but can still cause problems. While small nasal polyps may not cause any symptoms, large polyps or clusters of polyps can lead to breathing difficulties, a diminished sense of smell, recurrent infections, and nasal congestion. This condition is more common in adults than in children and is thought to be caused by chronic inflammation, such as asthma, drug allergies, or recurrent infections. Medications can often eliminate or reduce the size of nasal polyps, but surgery may be necessary to remove them. Even after removal, nasal polyps can recur.
