Breast Implant Revision Surgery in the UAE
What is Breast Implant Revision Surgery?
Breast implant revision surgery, also known as breast augmentation revision, involves replacing existing breast implants with new ones while also altering or improving the appearance of your breasts. At Novomed, we perform this procedure to help our patients restore their original appearance, adjust the size or type of their implants and correct any deformity issues that may have arisen from a previous breast augmentation. The overall goal is to restore the youthful shape and look of the breasts.
Several factors can cause your breast implants to deviate from your original expectations or appearance. These factors could be related to changes in the breast tissue (typically caused by pregnancy and breastfeeding), the breast augmentation procedure itself, or the quality of the breast implant.
You may benefit from breast augmentation revision if:
- You are experiencing implant deflation
- An X-ray showed a shell leak in your implant
- You want your implant to have a different size or form
- Scar tissue is tightening around the breast
- Your implants have relocated from where they were before
- You’ve gained or lost weight, and as a result, the tissue in your breasts has changed
Reasons for Breast Implant Revision
This procedure can be done for medical and cosmetic reasons, the most common of which are:
- Adjusting the size, shape, and position of the breasts
- Pain from capsular contracture (a thick, hard, and tight scar tissue appearing around the breast implant)
- Correcting implant-related problems such as implant leak or rupture
- Improving the appearance of sagging implants or sagging breast tissue around the implants
- Replacing a ruptured breast implant
- Wanting to switch to a different type of breast implant
- Correcting initial procedure complications, such as scar tissue formation or an improper implant position
- Wanting to remove the implants or reduce their size
Breast Augmentation Revision Consultation
If you’re considering breast implant revision surgery, remember that it is a complex procedure that needs to be designed to help you achieve your goals while addressing any pre-existing complications, scarring, or other issues from your previous augmentation surgery.
During the initial consultation, your plastic surgeon will review your medical history and perform a physical exam to determine the current state of your implants. They may also use X-rays to check if there are any leaks or ruptures in your implants. It is necessary to discuss your concerns and goals with the surgeon during this stage to help them develop a treatment plan that suits your needs. Our board-certified plastic surgeons are well-trained and experienced in all forms of breast surgery and will carefully listen to your goals and desires before devising a surgical plan that addresses all issues.
Finally, if you want to lose weight or become pregnant, you should inform your plastic surgeon, as this may alter the outcome of your breast augmentation revision.
Breast Augmentation Revision Procedure
While modern breast implants can last a long time, expecting them to last the rest of your life is unrealistic. You will almost certainly require a breast augmentation revision operation in the future.
The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and lasts 30 minutes to 150 minutes, depending on the revision type needed.
Bruising and swelling are two of the most common side effects. The breast shape may alter over time, and the ultimate result may not be visible for several months. Augmentation-mastopexy is linked to a higher rate of corrective surgery than either breast augmentation or breast lift alone.
Recovery
Patients should expect to return to work in 1 to 2 weeks and should avoid intense activity for 3 weeks. Visible bruising should fade within 2 weeks, and swelling should resolve within three weeks.
Incisions will be made throughout the surgery, depending on the changes you wish to make to your breasts. You’ll need to wear bandages across your chest for a few days after the treatment, then a sports bra. It’s critical to take time off for recovery, especially if you had extensive reconstructive surgery. If you don’t gain or lose much weight or have a baby, your breast form should stay the same throughout the years.
After breast augmentation revision, patients often experience swelling, bruising, and discomfort in the chest area, which last up to several days. Most patients can return to work and social activities within one to two weeks. Strenuous activities such as heavy lifting or intensive exercise should be avoided for several weeks.
The risks associated with breast augmentation revision are the same as your original surgery. Some potential risks may include adverse reactions to anesthesia, infection, blood clots, capsular contracture, a loss of nipple sensitivity, rippling, or rupture.
