What is a Photofacial?
There are two types of photofacail methods, IPL (intense-pulsed light) and LED (non-IPL or “light therapy). At Novomed we use IPL for more serious conditions that affect deeper layers of the skin, such as wrinkles and age spots. IPL photofacial treatments are more vigorous, and effective than LED photofacial treatments. IPL photofacial treats a variety of skin conditions, whereas LED photofacial works best for minor skin problems that act only on the outer layer of the skin’s epidermis.
IPL Photofacial treats skin conditions such as:
- Acne
- Uneven skin tone
- Sun damage
- Wrinkles
- Sagging skin
- Age spots
- Dull complexion
- Red, flushing skin
- Rosacea
- Large pores
- Early signs of aging
- Freckles
What to expect?
IPL Photofacial treatment lasts approximately twenty minutes to an hour, depending on the size of the skin surface being treated. First, the nurse or physician will apply a cool gel to your face and give you light protective glasses to wear during the entire treatment. Then the specialist will run a handpiece along your skin. This handpiece has a cold, smooth surface that pulses light. After the treatment, you will be provided with a cold or ice pack, and a moisturizer will be applied to your skin. Typically, patients will receive between 3-6 treatments spaced about 2 to 4 weeks apart. The number of treatments needed varies on the skin condition and level of improvement desired.
Are there side effects?
IPL Photofacials come with some mild side effects which commonly show immediately after the treatment. These side effects can last anywhere from two hours to one week and can include the following:
- Mild swelling You will be provided a small ice pack or cold pack, but you may develop swelling regardless.
- Redness This side effect is fairly common, and generally goes away after a few hours.
- Crusting If you are treating dark spots, they will grow hard and begin to flake. This side effect is normal and temporary.
- Bruising Is fairly uncommon, but if bruises do appear, they are mild.
- Small Blisters These blisters are similar to sun blisters and will fade with time.
Benefits of IPL Photofacial
There are various benefits that will gradually appear after the treatment. Improvements will continue to increase after each treatment. You will notice enhancements such as:
- Improved sunspots, sun damage, and age spots
- The complexion will become less dull
- Large pores will tighten
- A more even skin tone
- Reduced signs of aging, fine lines, and wrinkles
- Smoother skin
- Improvement of red flushing, broken capillaries
- Treatment of rosacea
