What is filler dissolving?
If you are unhappy with your dermal filler results, hyaluronidase or hyalase is a prescription-only enzyme that can be injected into your skin to dissolve unwanted hyaluronic acid dermal fillers like Juvéderm, Restylane, Teosyal, and Belotero.
Hyaluronidase is found naturally in human skin, but it can also be injected in higher quantities into the area where the filler was injected and dissolves it, removing the unwanted filler volume safely, quickly, and painlessly from the skin area.
What are the reasons for filler dissolving?
There are several reasons why people would want to dissolve and remove their fillers, such as:
- Misplaced or over-filled fillers.
- The filler has spread to other areas.
- Filler unevenness.

Am I a suitable candidate for filler dissolving?
This treatment will not work if your filler is non-hyaluronic acid-based, such as Radiesse or Sculptra, because the fillers are not soluble and need to be removed surgically.
Unless you are allergic to hyaluronidase, filler dissolving procedures are safe for all adults who have undergone hyaluronic acid-based fillers.
How to prepare for filler dissolving?
During the consultation, our dermatologist will assess the area that will be treated and create an effective treatment plan for you and explain all potential outcomes and risks of the treatment.
You will be advised to avoid taking blood-thinning medications in the week leading up to the treatment because it can make bleeding worse.
You will also need to refrain from drinking alcohol for one day before the treatment.
What should I expect before having filler dissolving?
A patch test will be performed before the treatment to confirm that you are not allergic to hyaluronidase. The doctor will inject a little dose of medicine into your forearm and monitor you for 30 minutes. If no allergic reactions occur, your practitioner will proceed to dissolve the dermal filler.
What happens during the filler dissolving procedure?
On the day of the treatment, a patch test is performed on your arm to ensure that you are not allergic to the hyaluronidase enzyme that will be injected. Signs of allergy include swelling, rash, or redness at the injection site. You can safely proceed with the treatment after 20 minutes if there are no signs of allergic reaction. Our experienced dermatologist will administer a numbing cream to the treatment area to alleviate any discomfort, and the treatment will begin once the area is numb.
In most cases, the injection procedure takes no more than 5 minutes. The doctor will inject small amounts of the enzyme directly into the area where the filler was injected using a micro-needle or a cannula to dissolve it. They will massage the area after the solution has been injected to ensure that it is evenly distributed to dissolve the filler in that area. Following treatment, the doctor will apply aftercare cream and discuss how to best care for the treated region. You may need more than one treatment to remove all the unwanted filler if necessary.
What to expect after filler dissolving?
Because hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring component in the body, it is unlikely to cause unwanted responses. You may experience some redness, swelling, or bruising after the treatment, but these side effects will resolve after two days. Following the hyaluronidase injection, you will need to stay in the clinic for an hour to be monitored.
The results can be seen once the swelling has gone down. For some patients, results are noticeable in the first 48 hours, but for others, results can take up to 2 to 3 days to appear.
