Shoulder Replacement Surgery
Shoulder replacement surgery, also known as shoulder arthroplasty, involves replacing damaged portions of the shoulder joint with artificial components to relieve discomfort and restore shoulder motion. During this procedure, an orthopedic surgeon uses metal or plastic prosthetics to replace the natural bone in the ball and socket of your shoulder joint.
When to opt for shoulder replacement surgery?
If you have conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, rotator cuff tear, or avascular necrosis, you may benefit from shoulder replacement surgery as it can help relieve your pain, improve your strength, increase your range of motion and enable you to use your shoulder and arm.
Shoulder joint replacement is required if non-surgical treatments such as medication or physical therapy were not successful in treating your condition or reliving pain.
What are the types of shoulder replacement surgery?
Shoulder replacement procedures are performed under general anesthesia and take around 3 hours. Our orthopedic surgeon will determine the surgical approach suitable for you depending on the type of joint injury you have.
There are three types of shoulder replacement procedures:
1- Total shoulder replacement:
This procedure is considered the most effective surgical option for treating patients who have debilitating shoulder arthritis; it involves replacing both the ball and socket surfaces of your shoulder with prosthetics designed to work like the bones in their normal state.
2- Partial shoulder replacement:
If shoulder injury is affecting the ball side of the joint only, the surgeon will advise partial shoulder replacement to remove the humeral head of the arm and replace it with a prosthetic ball, leaving the joint socket intact.
3- Reverse shoulder replacement:
Reverse shoulder replacement can relieve shoulder pain and improve joint function in patients with arthritis, rotator cuff tears, and instability or after a failed joint surgery.
In a reverse total shoulder replacement, the surgeon removes the rounded head of the upper arm bone and attaches a plastic socket to the remaining bone using screws and special tools. The surgeon also removes part of the socket of the shoulder blade and replaces it with a metal ball.
